We all know Captain Cook, but what about the Tahitian navigator Tupaia who helped make his journey to New Zealand a success? This Polynesian High Priest proved to be a diplomat, a politician and an artist. The film describes Tupaia’s adventure and reflects the Maori fascination for this character, who they recognised as one of them, and who is still remembered today by many New Zealanders. It shows the Oceanic version of the first contact between the English and the Maoris.
