And how they created the myth of paradise while their workers struggled for better working conditions.

These are two worlds colliding: the bosses and their wealth on one side, the workers and their poverty on the other hand. Kauai is a denunciation of the darkest sides of capitalism. Major sugar and pineapple-growing industries do not give up anything to make money, not even to overthrow the Kingdom of Hawaii, with the help of the American Navy, and to install their own government. At the time, tensions rise between the Hawaiians who maintain their autonomy through a complicated system of land management and the brand-new companies that divert water for the cultivation of sugarcane. With the establishment of their own government, laws that leave them free while at the same time handcuffing those of the indigenous people, forced to fulfill certain conditions if they want to remain on their land, this annexation allows them to run their business at full speed. And then the thriving economies of sugar and pineapple decline, the companies then turn to tourism. The first Hollywood films are filmed in Kauai, promoting a true paradise on Earth, while at the same time the plantation workers, who have become the workers of hotels and tourist complexes, struggle for better working conditions and, above all, to try to afford housing. The «Big Five», as the five major sugar and pineapple companies were dubbed, still owns the majority of the habitable land on Kauai.« On Kauai, the cost of living is currently the highest in the United States. For those who have the means, it is always paradise but for the residents, the island is on the verge of collapse.»

It was while working on a sugar company in the United States that Anthony Banua-Simon came up with the idea for his film, now competing at the FIFO. While working on this first documentary, he rediscovered the traces of his family, who came from Puerto Rico to work on the sugar and pineapple plantations in Hawaii. Some, like his grandfather, even worked as extras in Hollywood films shot on the plantations. «They employed a lot of locals but never for the main roles; just to do the background work,» his great-uncle laughs today, Henry, who will be his guide for visiting the former abandoned sites and telling him about the union struggles of the time. His cousins will be the link to today: how to find accommodation when everything is so expensive? How to work with dignity without union protection and with the promise of being fired with a yes or no? The history of the Hawaiians is chilling. In the face of reality, the myth does not last long, but it is still this one that is sold to the general public. Moreover, we see a real estate promoter, without conscience or principles, playing the game in front of the camera, but his cynicism is evident in his crocodile tears.« Cane Fire »", the title of the film, is finally the end that was never seen in the first melodrama filmed in these plantations and censored for its too explicit images. This film ended with the fire of a plantation by a young girl who was angry because her lover had rejected her: they were afraid that this would give the workers ideas... But the director finds all sorts of images from B-movie films: bombs, fires, shootings, and allows all our fury to be satisfied.

Article written by Sulianne Favennec

Cane Fire réalisé par Anthony Banua-Simon raconte comment le « Big five » ou les cinq plus grandes industries sucrières et d’ananas ont pris possession de l’île de Kauai à Hawaii.
