Andi, Marie-Claude Tjibaou and <\/em>Waan Yaat on the land of the Republic These are two films by Doroth\u00e9e Tromparent. Both are officially selected for this FIFO 2023. Both are poignant and tell a particular story: that of a woman with undeniable influence and that of bloody events that forever changed a country.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is an inspiring and charismatic personality. She is also a very noble and upright woman. This is Marie-Claude Tjibaou, the wife of Jean-Marie, a Kanak independence activist who was murdered. The filmmaker, who has lived in the French territory of New Caledonia for decades, wanted to tell her story and her journey. Co-directed with Emmanuel Tjibaou, her son, Doroth\u00e9e Tromparent built a very deep relationship of trust with this great woman. \u00ab We were a small, motivated team; we were like a small family. I think it\u2019s a path we\u2019re all following together. A path of trust and work.<\/em>.\u00bb.\u00ab, confides the director, sitting under the pae pae of Hiro, who wanted to show a more funny, gentle and tender side of Marie-Claude Tjibaou.\u00ab She is very bright and ultra charismatic but she has kept herself very much protected from the outside world. We wanted to go beyond those walls<\/em> \u00bbIt took time, but also sometimes courage; a balance to be found without ever losing sight of the goal.\u00ab You have to let yourself be guided by your instinct. You must never give up on daring. In the film for example there is an intimate moment for me that is daring but she loved it!<\/em> \u00bb. A moment of emotion but a film about history also involves emotion. Doroth\u00e9e had a goal: that people would remember that Marie-Claude Tjibaou has had a crazy journey, but that she is also part of the history of the country.\u00ab In Caledonia, much of the history remains to be written. That takes a lot of time because we have to verify every point and every fact. The documentary is a memory for the country and the broadcasters are accompanying us in this process.<\/em> \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To spark dialogue<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Doroth\u00e9e Tromparent focuses in her films on telling the story exactly as it is. She is the creator of a second film, selected for the FIFO program., Waan Yaat, on the land of the Republic<\/em>. This documentary recounts one of the bloody episodes of the Events<\/em> On December 5, 1984 in Waan Yaat, Hiengh\u00e8ne Valley, independence activists were victims of an ambush. It resulted in 10 deaths and 5 injuries. A trap set by colonists terrified by the risk of being driven from their lands. If the killers admit to the facts, justice absolves them. This film is unique in that it gives the words to the victims as well as to the authors of the shooting. \u00ab We hope that he will be able to treat everyone there in Caledonia. Making this film is an attempt to encourage dialogue, for people to talk to each other and present their viewpoints. This is a first step.<\/em> \u00bbThe film serves as a therapy for the authors who remain; they even speak out even if reconciliation between the two parties is not yet possible. Victims and killers are not ready. The documentary also made the story known to the descendants of the authors of the shooting, the story of a country and a story of families.\u00ab A documentary is about telling the truth, even if the scars are still quite raw. It is important and essential because it is a collective pain. In New Caledonia, it is necessary to go slowly.
